If you want to become a veterinary technician but you don't live near any of the accredited programs, don't worry. There are actually nine programs that are accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) that offer a distance learning option. This way you can get your degree online. Most of these programs are two years long and offer an associate degree, however, St. Petersburg College in Florida also has the option of continuing on to get your bachelors degree in four years of study.

Those wanting to get their vet tech online degree will need to choose between the following nine schools: Blue Ridge Community College (for VA residents only), Cedar Valley College in Texas, Jefferson State Community College in Alabama, Moraine Park Technical College in Wisconsin, Northern Virginia Community College, Penn Foster College in Arizona, Purdue University in Indiana, St. Petersburg College in Florida, and San Juan College in New Mexico.

In order to qualify for admission into a vet tech online degree program, you need to have either a high school diploma or a GED. Once you have been admitted you will be able to complete your coursework, which may include reading assignments, video assignments, internet assignments and in-clinic assignments. You usually need to get an internship or a job in a veterinary setting in order to be able to complete the program. Courses include animal nursing, laboratory and examination procedures, pharmacy and pharmacology, radiology, surgical preparation and assistance, and ultrasound, among others. Most schools also require some general education classes such as English, fine arts, humanities, math, speech and communication, and social or behavioral sciences in order to get the associate degree.

Completing your vet tech online degree will give you a lot of different job opportunities. Some of the types of facilities where you might find a position include academia; clinics; commercial, humane societies; research and pharmaceutical companies; state and federal labs; and veterinary hospitals (including emergency, equine, exotic, large animal, mixed animal, small animal or referral hospitals). There are excellent job opportunities and a much faster than average job growth for veterinary technicians according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for these positions is $29,850, with the top ten percent of technicians making more than $41,490 and the bottom ten percent making less than $19,770.
